Namhaean Byeolsingut is
The Namhaean Byeolsingut is a communal ceremonial festival observed in villages along the southern coastline,
predominantly around Tongyeong and Geoje in Gyeongnam Province. Conducted under the guidance of hereditary shamans
(mudangs), it encompasses rituals for mourning the departed and offering solace to their families, particularly through the
Okwisae Namgut, an integral ritual within the repertoire of these hereditary shamans.
Focused on rituals, Namhaean Byeolsingut serves as a conduit for the transmission of our distinct communal beliefs and cultural legacy, deeply rooted in long-standing traditions, incorporating diverse and comprehensive artistic elements showcased during these festivals. Furthermore, it plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the historical significance of the villages where these ceremonies unfold. Recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1987, Young-man Jeong, the custodian of Namhaean Byeolsingut, collaborates with local residents and participants to ensure the continuous preservation and passage of this shared communal cultural legacy.
